Oil on Cotton

About

Oil on Cotton lists the clothing sold by museum shops. Each shop is a room, and every piece links to the shop that sells it. Nothing is sold here.

What is listed

A shop gets a room once its terms have been read and they allow it. Rooms are open for Getty Museum Store, LACMA Store and Whitney Shop.

Shops whose terms forbid collecting listings or prices, or forbid robots, are left out. The clause behind each decision is quoted in data/museums.yaml.

How prices are checked

A crawler called OilOnCottonBot reads each listed shop's clothing pages once a week. It signs its requests, follows robots.txt, and keeps only the name, price, sizes in stock and link of each piece. Its page is at bot.oiloncotton.com.

Prices and stock change between checks. Each room shows the date of its last check, and the shop's own page has the final word.

No money changes hands

The site has no ads, no affiliate links and nothing for sale. No shop pays to be listed, and the site earns nothing when you buy. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any museum.

The walls

Each room is painted a colour from Robert Ridgway's Color Standards and Color Nomenclature (1912), and the colour's name is on the wall. For now the values are approximations from published ISCC-NBS centroids, not measured from the plates.
